An honest mechanic?

Okay, I don't want to pay the prices they charge at the dealer anymore, and I've had it with those stupid chain Jiffy Lube/Snappy Lube places. Even though I'm mechanically inclined, I also don't have a garage (see previous thread on ridiculous real estate prices.) Does anyone know of an honest, trustworthy auto shop that services Hondas?

Best Traffic Strategies?

Yo, peeps. I'm new to this tribe and to Glendale... I've ben wondering:

a) What's that website I've heard about that tells you the traffic?

b) Please tell your best routes to avoid traffic?

(recently I used a funky route to go to Bev Hills, Unsure best way to go to Silverlake, hit sick traffic on 405 going to Santa Monica... I KNOW it will be hard, but want to learn what I can to minimize the torture!)

General Growth Properties Inc., the second-largest U.S. shopping mall owner, lost a bid to stop construction a new retail center in Glendale, California, that's planned for a site next to the company's Glendale Galleria.

The approval of measures A, B and C in a special city election will allow developer Rick "THe Grove" Caruso to build a $264 million open-air mall on city-owned land adjacent to the Glendale Galleria, the largest retail center in the Los Angeles suburb. Measure A won 51.8 percent of the vote, Measure B won 51.4 percent, and Measure C obtained 50.9 percent in yesterday's election, according to the city Web site.

Caruso Wins First Round of Mall Wars

The outdoor lifestyle center has defeated the enclosed mall-at least in Glendale, Calif. On Tuesday night, voters in the southern California city narrowly approved three measures that would allow renowned developer Rick Caruso to build his $264 million Americana at Brand outdoor mall.

The vote follows months of a heated campaign between Caruso and General Growth Properties, which funded the petition for a referendum election on the mall and owns the nearby Glendale Galleria.

Opponents to Caruso's 265,000-square-foot-center said the proposed mall does not fit in with area business and would cause traffic jams. The Americana will include retail, restaurants, movie theatres and a two-acre park in the middle of the city.

"The voters saw through General Growth's campaign of misinformation, deception and outright lies and perceived it for what it was-an effort to head off competition," said Rick Caruso in a press release, CEO of Caruso Affiliated, which will develop the mall.

It is estimated that Caruso spent $1.8 million in direct mail, print ads and television commercials to defend his project, while General Growth spent $1.5 million in its opposition campaign.

General Growth wasn't immediately available for comment.

You know, overall, I like living in this part of the Valley. I bitch about it all the time, but the truth is, I'd shut up if home ownership here weren't only accessible to the filthy rich. Rent is still not that bad, but the cost of a home in Glendale/Burbank/Pasadena is completely out of control. I can't even afford a tiny condo, and I wonder how the hell people can afford to live here. So, my question is, how many of you own your place, and what is it? When did you buy?

They've been doing a good job at trying to preserve some of the great old buildings and houses from being giganticized and/or torn down. They also have hosted several Art Faire's and open houses worth checking out...

I just have to say, it's refreshing to see this tribe when everyone's still so hung up on the Westside.. I'll take the trees, mountains and streams any day... I like to think of Glendale as a little slice of the diversity and good sides of LA

Brand Bookshop

My favorite used book store is Brand Bookshop (231 N. Brand). They will buy books and give you cash (or my favorite because it's More is store credit. Their selection is so good I can always find something.)
